Leeds Rhinos 50-28 Wakefield Wildcats Boxing Day Festive Challenge 2014

So for our traditional Boxing Day game with Wakefield Wildcats, we decided on bringing the youngsters in as well as throwing in Adam Cuthbertson who made his debut. And it paid off big time as Ash Handley grabbed himself 5, yes you saw that right...FIVE tries.

However it was Wakefield who got off to a flying start, going 0-12 up within the first 12 minutes of the game. However Stevie Ward pulled a try back but that was to be followed by a Wakefield try who extended their lead.

18-6 after 18 minutes, the Rhinos then began to get a foothold on the game with Ash Handley getting his first and the scores were level not long after after a great try from Danny McGuire, Liam Sutcliffe was assigned the kicking duties I should add here.

Handley then added two more tries to his haul, both were assisted by Tom Briscoe and that gave the Rhinos a good lead to take into half-time.

The second half came and Rhinos scored twice and it was the man of the match Ash Handley with his two tries to make it a golden haul of 5. The latter try coming from him palming off FOUR Wakefield players to cross the whitewash.

Liam Sutcliffe who kicked 5 from 7 conversion attempts did score a wonderful try of his own. The score at this point was 44-18.

Elliot Minchella scored the 9th try for Rhinos and the score was 50-18 until two late tries from Wakefield took it up to 50-28.

Overall a good exercise for the youngsters of the Rhinos and I have to say Ashton Golding is starting to really show a lot of promise as well as Ash Handley and Elliot Minchella.

Traditional Boxing Day game. (Wakefield Wildcats vs Leeds Rhinos 26/12/14)

So we are to face Wakefield Wildcats next Friday in the traditional Boxing Day showpiece. Does this mean we will see Adam Cuthbertson make his debut (unofficially of course!) for the club and will the youngsters like Liam Sutcliffe, Josh Walters and Robbie Mulhern also see some game time? I surely hope so.

We will see our former boys Paul McShane and Ian Kirke face us and that will obviously be bittersweet for them but also nice for them to try get one over us. Which won't happen hehe.

Anyway after the whole Christmas celebrations are over, I will blog about the game complete with pictures.

See you then!

Looking ahead to the new season. 2014/15

With the new season looming upon us, I thought I'd write a pre-season blog about the Rhinos at the current moment.

Adam Cuthbertson

Having signed Adam from Newcastle Knights, I have seen videos of him and as far as I can tell, he is a very astute signing. Powerful and full of determination, I am looking forward to seeing what he can do for Leeds Rhinos in the coming months.

Blooding youngsters

So it seems instead of signing new players bar Adam Cuthbertson, we are going to blood our youngsters which is a good thing for me because we have a range of talent in Brad Singleton and Liam Sutcliffe along with the likes of Josh Walters and Robbie Mulhern.  If it works for other clubs, then I can't see why it would not work for us. Good luck to the aforementioned for the coming season.

The new home and away kit.

Now as far as kits go, the new ones that have been released by Rhinos are for me very very good. I love the home kit because the sponsor is less bulky and takes up less space than previous shirts and the two contrasts of blue really work well together.

The away kit which was released 02/12/2014 is also superb and has been getting lots of praise from fans far and wide. I cannot wait to see these shirts being displayed throughout the season.

I would also like to take this opportunity for not blogging in the latter part of the season. This season will be different as I will blog on ALL games.  Thanks for reading this blog and enjoy the blogs in the next few months. :)

Leeds Rhinos vs Hull FC 23/05/14

Leeds Rhinos came into this game needing to get their Super League ambitions back on track in this wet and rather cold encounter with Hull FC. Hull FC had just come off the back of a heavy defeat by their bitter rivals Hull KR and they were also vying for a win. Making a debut for the Rhinos was 18 year old Robbie Ward.

Leeds dominated throughout the game and the only try in the first half came through Joel Moon after superb play by Ryan Hall allowed the former through to score. Kevin Sinfield converted and it was 6-0 at the break.

Shortly afterwards, Leeds added to their lead through Brad Singleton who is on top form at the moment. Sir Kev once again converted and he also hit a penalty shortly afterwards.

Leeds were running comfortably with the game and their debutant Robbie Ward made his debut a dream one with a try and Kevin Sinfield added the conversion to make the score 20-6.

Right at the end of the game, Hull FC got a consolation try through Jamie Shaul and Joe Westerman converting to make the final score 20-6 to Leeds.

Leeds remain on top of the table by one point.

Man of the Match was Mitch Achurch, strong and great in the tackle and having a great all round game.

Injury doubt was Jamie Peacock but he is available for the Warrington game.

 Until next time....

Leeds Rhinos vs Wigan Warriors 17/05/14 (Magic Weekend)

Leeds came into the Magic Weekend hoping to extend their winning streak, but they knew they would face stiff competition from Wigan who had been picking up form. The game had a whiff of tension about it. The opening exchanges were exciting and it was the home side who would go into the lead through Anthony Gelling's try. Matty Smith added the conversion and shortly afterwards a penalty to make it 8-0.  Tensions erupted when firstly Gil Dudson tackled Danny McGuire and both teams entered a brawl but this was just after Jamie Peacock had been high tackled by Michael McIlorum. 2 Wigan players got sin-binned, one being McIlorum the other being John Bateman. Leeds had Ryan Bailey sin-binned. This saw Leeds gain advantage and scored their only try of the half through Ryan Hall. Kevin Sinfield was unable to convert so it was 8-4.

Wigan however went further ahead through Blake Green, Smith converting once more and this left Leeds a battle on their hands in the second half.

The second half arrived and Wigan scored their third try of the game through Michael McIlorum and Smith once again converted. Leeds suddenly upped their gear and Carl Ablett scored a try after he created space for himself.  Ryan Hall got his second not long afterwards and Sinfield converted one of the tries to make the scores 18-14. Joel Moon was denied a try by the video ref shortly before full-time and this led to Wigan beating Leeds.

Man of the Match - Zak Hardaker for me, he's proving his worth every game.

Leeds Rhinos vs Wigan Warriors 2/05/14

Leeds Rhinos came into this game at home in buoyant mood following the brilliant win over St Helens in the Challenge Cup last week and it didn't take long for the opponents to knock on to allow Leeds the perfect chance to score. And that they did through Danny McGuire who picked the ball up from Ryan Hall and he went over. It went to the video referee but it was never in doubt.  Kevin Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-0.

On the 14th minute mark, Rhinos attacked yet again, giving Zak Hardaker the chance and space to  zone in on the try-line and he did so superbly and with one hand. Sir Kev missed the conversion but Leeds were ahead 10-0.

Wigan got back into it slowly and surely and it wasn't long before they got their try through Tony Clubb. Matty Smith added the conversion to make it 10-6.  Thereon in, the game was a brilliant show of hard-hitting defence between both sides. Three minutes before half-time however, Leeds managed to get their third try when Kallum Watkins hauled the ball to Tom Briscoe but not before brilliant work by Ryan Hall. Tom Briscoe stuck the ball over the line and Leeds were ahead 16-6 at the break when Sir Kev converted.

The second half started at an exhilarating pace when Ryan Hall produced a stunning run and showed us all what he is capable of and he went over the line. Sir Kev made sure his kicking boots were well and truly on and he converted to give Leeds the lead at 22-6.

Wigan's defence were holding firm for much of the second half as was Leeds' and a try for Leeds was disallowed for Joel Moon and this gave Wigan the momentum to go score what would be their consolation try. This time it came from Scott Taylor, Smith once again converted. At this point it was 22-12. However Leeds came back the strongest and after Sir Kev opted not to kick for goal, this gave a huge advantage to Leeds and Liam Sutcliffe who is proving to be a very good player for Leeds went over to score the pivotal try of the game. Sir Kev made it 5 out of 6 and the game finished 28-6.

Man of the Match goes to Zak Hardaker, he produced a wonderful display and also a stunning slide tackle to take Matt Bowen out of play. He's a bright player!

No injury doubts to tell you about, we still have Rob Burrow and JJB out.

Until next time!

Leeds Rhinos vs St Helens (Challenge Cup) 26/04/14

Leeds Rhinos were aiming to exact revenge on St Helens in the Challenge Cup after they narrowly lost to them in the league earlier this season. The ground was bustling with excitement and it didn't take long for the first try to come along, courtesy of a knock-on by St Helens. Zak Hardaker showed great composure to score his first of two tries, albeit one-handed. Kevin Sinfield added the conversion.

However ten minutes later, Saints hit back through Adam Swift, Luke Walsh added the conversion to make the score level. The rest of the first half was evenly contested and three minutes before the break, the tide turned in Leeds' favour when Ryan Hall excellently offloaded to Zak Hardaker to add his second try of the game. Sir Kev added the conversion to make it 12-6 at the break.

The second half started with a try within the first ten minutes for Leeds, but not before Sir Kev converted a penalty. Joel Moon put his name on the score-sheet with a superb try and Sir Kev added the conversion. At this point it was 20-6 to Leeds.

Saint Helens were still pushing Leeds however and they got their second try courtesy of Josh Jones, this was again converted by Luke Walsh. They then went on the hunt for more tries but they were to be kapowed by two further tries. These came from Danny McGuire and Jamie Peacock. Sir Kev added both conversions and made sure Leeds booked their place in the quarter-final. The final score was 32-12.

Man of the Match went to Ryan Hall, who was a constant menace throughout the game.

Injury doubt - Rob Burrow has suffered a broken collar bone. Get well soon Rob.

Until next time.....

Leeds Rhinos vs Salford Red Devils 21/04/14

Following Friday's emphatic win against Bradford Bulls and with only a couple of days rest between both games, Rhinos welcomed Salford Red Devils to Headingley Carnegie. The game started well in Leeds' favour and it wasn't long before Leeds took the lead and again the captain Kevin Sinfield took centre stage after fine work from Mitch Achurch allowed him the space and time to cross the line. He then converted his own try.

However Salford didn't come to be turned over and they took their fair share of possession which meant Leeds had to defend superbly. But they couldn't stop Logan Tomkins going over. Jake Mullaney missed the conversion attempt and it meant Leeds retained their narrow lead. They kept this right through to half-time.

Leeds and Salford started the second half in a similar vein to the first but Leeds proved to be the more clinical. This was to be shown when Ben Jones-Bishop ran 80m down the field but as he was being tackled he offloaded to Zak Hardaker who then finished with the end product. Sir Kev once again converted.

Not long afterwards, Rob Burrow increased the score-line thanks to good work from Joel Moon, thus allowing Rob to cross the line. Sir Kev made sure of the conversion attempt. Leeds didn't stop there with the try-scoring and to make sure of the result,  Ben Jones-Bishop,Ryan Hall and Tom Briscoe all scored tries to give Leeds a 32-4 win. Kev converted Bishop's try but couldn't quite kick Hall's and Briscoe's. Another resounding win for the Rhinos as we march on in the season.

Man of the Match - Sir Kev he's managed to hit the try-scoring quite a bit this season and despite not getting the last two conversion attempts, his kicking is still very clinical.

Injury doubts - Danny McGuire did appear to have a cut to his head after defending an Salford onslaught but he came on in the last ten mins of the game so he should be okay for Saturday.

Until next time......

Leeds Rhinos vs Bradford Bulls 17th April 2014

Rhinos were aiming to continue their very impressive form with a win against Bradford Bulls in the Super League. It was also Rob Burrow's 400th appearance for the club. They started very well through captain Kevin Sinfield, he picked up a bounce from a kick by Danny McGuire and took the ball over the line, he then converted his try.

Shortly afterwards, fantastic handling by Ryan Hall and a clever kick by Sir Kev enabled Joel Moon to go over in the corner. However Sir Kev hit the post with his conversion attempt.

This was to set Leeds well on their way with a flurry of tries, Danny McGuire being the latest to add to the growing tally after the Bulls allowed him too much space to get in and score. Sir Kev hit the target this time with the conversion attempt. At this point it was 0-16 to the Rhinos.

Ryan Hall then grabbed 1 of 3 tries after great work by Kallum Watkins and Rob Burrow. Sir Kev pulled his attempt wide.

It was at this point that Bradford Bulls came into the game and they scored a try after Zak Hardaker made a mistake and Lee Gaskell ran 80m to score. Luke Gale converted and the score was 6-20.  A few minutes later, just after he had come on for Mitch Achurch, Stevie Ward suffered a leg injury and had to come back off. Chris Clarkson replaced him. The remainder of the first half produced no further tries from either side.

The second half started just as brilliantly as the first with Rhinos going on the attack again and they were to get their just reward when Ryan Hall scored his second try of the night after claiming a ball from a Leeds scrum and going over the line. Again Sir Kev hit the post and the score at this point was 6-24. Ryan Hall then got his hat-trick and Sir Kev made no mistake with the conversion.

This was to be the last real action of the game for Sir Kev as we have two huge games coming up he came off to be rested. Liam Sutcliffe came on in high spirits after scoring twice in two games previously.  He added his third in three games not long after coming on. Zak Hardaker took over the kicking reins and and it was 6-36 to Rhinos.

Kallum Watkins then produced a fine try of his own when he brushed off in-coming Bulls defenders and charged over the try-line. Hardaker hit the post with his conversion attempt.

Not to be outdone by his team-mates on his 400th appearance, Rob Burrow scored a try to make his night more special and Hardaker added the conversion to make the score 6-46 to the Rhinos.

What a wonderful performance from all and I will be giving the Man of the Match award to Ryan Hall, he just always performs every single game and he deserved his hat-trick of tries.

Injury doubt - Stevie Ward, I sincerely hope his leg injury is not as serious as it looks. Get well soon Stevie.

Until next time.....

Leeds Rhinos vs Wakefield Wildcats 11/04/14

After last week's resounding win in the Tetley's Challenge Cup, Rhinos were high on confidence and form going into this game in the Super League against Wakefield Wildcats. It was also Jamie Peacock's 500th game for the club.

As it did last week, the game started cautiously but it wasn't going to stay that way for long when Liam Sutcliffe scored his second try in two games after fantastic work from Ryan Hall who offloaded to Liam for the try. Kevin Sinfield converted the try.

Ryan then scored shortly afterwords after brilliantly collecting a mid-field ball and taking it over the line. Again Sir Kev converted the try.

Leeds were on a roll at this stage and the next person to score a try came to be Tom Briscoe who scored after wonderful work from Sir Kev and Kallum Watkins. Sir Kev kept up his good conversion kicks with 3 out of 3.

However Leeds took a blow when Ben Jones-Bishop took a whack to the head and had to be stretchered off. But this wasn't to stop Leeds adding another try before the end of the half when Carl Ablett kept up his try-scoring form with another one after dummying past two tacklers to go over. Sir Kev made it 4 out of 4 kicks.

The second half came and kept their fantastic form right up when Jamie Peacock scored a fantastic try on his 500th appearance and sent Headingley Carnegie into raptures. Sir Kev kicked the conversion once more.

Chris Clarkson who had earlier been denied a try, did get one after slicing through and finding a gap to score. Sir Kev made good work of his conversion attempt once again.

Rob Burrow, a constant threat throughout the game scored a beautiful try and ended the game with a wonderful double over Wakefield. Sir Kev made it 7 out of 7. Brilliant kicking game for him.

Man of the Match is again Rob Burrow, a threat with his pace and fantastic passing. He's been a fantastic player so far this season.

Injury doubt - Ben Jones-Bishop, he was taken to hospital at half-time as a pre-caution but is okay.  Hopefully he will be on the team-sheet for Thursday.

Until next time.......

Leeds Rhinos vs Wakefield Wildcats 6/04/14

Leeds Rhinos were hoping to get back to winning ways against Wakefield Wildcats in the Tetley's Challenge Cup. The nerves soon were dispelled when Rob Burrow scored the first try of the game.

This was to set the Rhinos on their way and it wasn't long after that Carl Ablett scored one of two tries by crossing the line after good supporting work by Kevin Sinfield.  Tries from Danny McGuire and Ryan Hall made the score 26-0. Sir Kev missed two of the conversion attempts.

Wakefield got a try back through Pita Godinet, Jarrod Sammut with their conversion. This was never going to deter the Rhinos however as in the last minute of the half as Ryan Hall scored his second try after brilliant work from Carl Ablett. Sir Kev did get his conversion attempt on target this time round.

Half-time came and went and the second half started as strongly as the first half when Liam Sutcliffe who returned to the Rhinos after a spell on loan at London Broncos scored his try after 50 minutes but not before Mitch Achurch put his name on the score-sheet when Hardaker and Sinfield combined to allow Achurch through. Sir Kev converted both tries to give the Rhinos a commanding 44-6 lead.

Leeds then entered the final period of the game in great fashion when Tom Briscoe added to the score-line with a superb try and Rob Burrow added another to his tally. Sir Kev booted his kick over to make the score-line more handsome and Joel Moon who has been on form this season scored the final try of the game and Sir Kev added the conversion to make it 60-6 to the Rhinos.

A fantastic game for the Rhinos and they march onto the next round of the Challenge Cup where they face St Helens. It should be a wonderful clash.

Man of the Match has to be Rob Burrow, he performed very very well in the game and to get two tries is a bonus.

No injury doubts from this game.

Until next time......

Leeds Rhinos vs St Helens 28/03/2014

Leeds came into this game in buoyant mood following last week's mauling of Hull KR. However they were not quite prepared for how stern a test St Helens would prove to be. The first half was a battle of two very good teams trying to make a break-through. On the 18th minute mark, Rhinos scored thanks to fabulous work from Kevin Sinfield and Carl Ablett to let Danny McGuire through for his 250th try of his career. It was also a landmark for Kevin Sinfield as he converted his 3,500 points for the club.

However St Helens were growing in confidence and hit back on 24 minutes through Anthony Walker and Tommy Makinson converted shortly afterwards.

Both defences were holding firm for the remainder of the first half and chances were far and few between. The second half however proved to be a more exciting affair for both clubs and the video ref was kept busy throughout. Leeds took the lead again through a penalty by Sinfield after the Saints were caught offside. McGuire then had a try wiped out after he had spilled the ball.

Saints soon took the lead through Makinson after the ref adjudged that an obstruction by Soliola was not going to stop the Saints going for the try-line. Makinson missed his conversion so it was 10-8 to Saints.

Leeds however refused to lie down and 10 minutes before the final whistle Sinfield kicked another penalty to level the scores. However late drama ensued when Makinson collected a kick from Jonny Lomax and scored to break Rhinos' hearts and claim a victory for St Helens.

Man of the Match - I'm going to give it to the defence as they worked their socks off all game.

Injury worry is Jamie Jones-Buchanan who came off in the first half after suffering a bust bicep.

Let's all hope we get a really good win next week against Wakefield Wildcats in the Challenge Cup.

Until next time.....

Leeds Rhinos vs London Broncos 21/03/14

After last week's impressive win over Widnes Vikings, the Rhinos were aiming to start on the same vein in this week's game against London Broncos and that they did when after just 84 seconds Danny McGuire sent over a grubber kick for Brad Singleton to collect and send over the line. Zak Hardaker added the conversion and overall scored 6 points for the Rhinos with his kicking.

Ryan Hall didn't take long to score his first of three tries in the first half after he managed to stretch one handed over the line.

Shortly after he came on, Mitch Achurch bagged himself through hard work of his own after Thomas Minns (on loan to London from Leeds) pulled him down but he still managed to get over the line.

Ryan Hall then scored his second try of the night after collecting Danny McGuire's kick and then charging through to score. His third came shortly after he beat off competition from Jamie O'Callaghan to complete his hat-trick. The rout didn't stop there in the first half however as Ben Jones-Bishop crossed the line to give Leeds a healthy lead at half-time.

The second half came and although it wasn't as try-laden as the first half we did still see some trys coming first from Zak Hardaker who had been doing pretty well all night thus far, he scored a try then added his own conversion. At this point it was 40-0 to Leeds.

London Broncos however did get what was to be their only try of the night through Mason Caton-Brown and the conversion was added by Josh Drinkwater.

Leeds were not going to stop at their 40-6 lead however and a try by Kallum Watkins, a second for Ben Jones-Bishop and a wonderful effort by Rob Burrow who added his conversion for his try, ensured Leeds went top of the table.

Man of the Match deservedly went to Ryan Hall for his hat-trick of tries and his determined performance throughout. Well done Ryan!

No real injury news to worry about but there was a debut for Robbie Mulhern. Congrats Robbie :)

Until next time......
